Mass Wasting in Japan ( Week 8)
In Japan the main mass movement that occurs are landslides, which every year they occur due to heavy rain, continued rainfall, snow melting, and the strong earthquakes that occur due to Japan being on 4 of the major tectonic plates, making Japan one of the most seismic places in the world. On average almost about 1,500 landslides occur in Japan every year which has increased about 50% within the last 10 years and 75% of Japan's assets are in flood-prone area which also contributes to the risk of a landslides. Due to the large amount of landslides that happen often these landslides claim the lost of many precious human lives every year. A couple things that Japan does to alert the population is with a warning system, which is issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) who is responsible for issuing weather/tsunami warnings and advisories which in this instance would be for heavy rains that could lead to landslides, they are required to provide reliable and timely information to residents and government agencies for the purpose of preventing and mitigating a natural disaster. Japan has one of the most advanced early warning systems in the world. In Japan there is a society called "The Japan Landslide Society", this society's main purpose is to research and study landslides and related phenomena as well as countermeasures for preventing such disasters. In the event of a landslide the Japan Landslide Society immediately organizes an emergency team of volunteer investigators to be sent to the scene of the disaster in order to investigate and is later on used for educational purposes. The Japan Landslide Society holds workshops, lectures, and and local meetings in order to educate the public.
